Having a great gym partner will make all the difference to getting the results you want. Some athletes prefer to workout on their own, while others thrive on that group mentality. Whichever case you are, working out in pairs pushes one another to achieve greater success. Here are some tips on finding a partner that is right for you when working out, and what characteristics usually make for good partnerships.
Good training partner characteristics
When it comes to looking for characteristics in potential workout partners, here are some of the major few: intensity, consistency, relationship value, and approach.
Intensity – When your partner can bring the intensity day in and day out, you’ll see your own results improve as a side effect. It’s almost as if you can’t help but work hard when you have a spark plug-type person in the room. Also, consider how you are influencing their mood. Do you have a good attitude? How do you reciprocate energy? Not everyone is built to be intense and bring that type of energy, but comradery should shine through regardless.
Consistency – perhaps the biggest pillar of any workout plan. Is your partner consistent? Be highly attentive to this. Any time you see yourself beginning to expect them to cancel, have a lack of energy, or lacking commitment to the process, you likely will not progress much. Remember, at the end of the day, your own goals should outweigh their own in your mind. While you do care and wish to be partners, if that behavior is not reciprocated on a consistent basis, it’s time to cut ties.
Relationship value – Although this doesn’t necessarily impact your results in a measurable sense, it will in the long term. You cannot be on bad terms with your workout partner and see great results. That may inspire you to do better, should you have gotten upset over something they said or anything to that effect. But that won’t help you in the long run. Find someone that has the same value of the relationship as you do. Don’t settle for less in this regard, as matched energy will create an environment where you want to workout rather than feel like you have to.
